Canillas de Aceituno

Canillas de Aceituno is located in the region of Axarquía in the province of Málaga, Andalusia. The village is situated at the natural park of the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, a beautiful nature reserve and ideal destination for e.g. hiking or mountain biking. The village has 2300 inhabitants. At an altitude of 645 meters, at the foot of the highest mountain in the Axarquía called La Maroma (2065 m), it overlooks the lake of Viñuela and the Mediterranean Sea. From Casa Lobera you can walk to the village in only 15 minutes.

Moorish origin

The name Canillas de Aceituno derives from the Latin word 'Cann-illae ' (place where reed grows) and from the Arabic word Azeytuni (woven and painted silk), which used to be an important commodity at the time of the Moors. At the 'Casa de Diezmos' on the village square the local population had to pay their taxes for silk to the caliph. From Canillas the Aceituno the only Spanish silk route departed, along Alcaucín across the mountain pass of Zafarraya to the mundane Granada, where the Nasrid Kingdom resided in the world famous Alhambra.

Ruta Mudéjar

Canillas de Aceituno is part of the Ruta Mudéjar along the white villages of Arenas, Árchez, Salares, Sedella and Canillas de Aceituno, where you can still find examples of the Mudéjar architecture. The name "Mudéjar" applies to the Muslims who remained in Spain after the Christian conquest (in the Axarquía in 1487) while maintaining their own religion, language and legal organization. The Moorish architecture is clearly visible in the five villages which give the villages their charm, e.g. church towers, gates, fountains and other details. Characteristic of this Mudéjar architecture is the use of inexpensive materials such as brick, plaster, ceramics and wood as well as decoration by applying embossed masonry, arches and ceramic tiles. More information about the Mudéjar route as well as other driving routes can be read here.

Canillas de Aceituno has a number of small grocery stores, a bakery, 2 butchers, several bars and 3 good restaurants: La Maroma, la Sociedad and Bodegón de Juan Maria. There is also a modern pharmacy and a bank with an ATM. On Friday morning there is a small market at the beginning of the village at  La Maroma restaurant. Read more about markets in the Axarquía.

On the last Sunday of April the 'Día de la Morcilla' (Day of the Black Pudding) is celebrated. This event attracts a large audience from all over Andalusia to taste the local delicacy.

In May the Romería de San Isídro takes place, a procession and celebration in honour of the patron saint of the farmers.
