A refreshing walk

A great day out for the whole family! The route crosses the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama natural park and offers plenty of shade and wonderful swimming in crystal clear water.

There is no better way to cool off on a hot summer day. Also fantastic together with kids! For many Spanish families this excursion is a 'classic' in summer. So try to go on a weekday if you can or during the weekend as early as possible. In the weekends and on local holidays it is always busier.

Fun for young and old!

Children like this walk very much! They can enjoy splashing around in the water and see all kinds of insects and animals. Higher up there are several ponds where they can play and swim. Eventually you will come across a series of real waterfalls! There are even some that offer a natural massage. This leisurely walk through the Rio Chillar is therefore highly recommended!

PLEASE NOTE: as with any river walk in Andalusia it is important to stay away if the weather forecasts predict rain. Flash floods may then occur which can be dangerous.

What do you need?

The walk itself is simple. You just have to bring the following:

  • a good pair of shoes that can get wet, e.g. old sports shoes (please also wear socks to avoid blisters) or river shoes. Most important is that they fit comfortably and that you do not slip, because some rocks can be slippery.
  • a picnic and sufficient drinking water
  • sunscreen with a high factor and other sun protection, such as sunglasses and a cap or hat
  • a stick that offers support during the walk can also be useful

Because this is a linear route you can return at any time along the route you have walked.

How to get there and parking

Below you will find the route from Casa Lobera to Río Chillar. Parking next to the cement factory is no longer possible but usually you can park your car along the road that leads to this factory. However, pay attention where parking is prohibited and do not block access to homes. Cars are often towed away in summer season.
